DR CROKES GOLF SOCIETY

Happy 2020 to all members.

As you all know the Committee has some retirees, namely Liam Hartnett (Sec.), John McEnery and Michael Howard. We thank and wish the lads well after 22 wonderful years of selflessly serving the Crokes Golf Society and Dr Crokes Club in fundraising etc. We welcome the incoming members John O Leary, Frank Shaw and Keith McMahon and thank them for stepping up to the plate. Ger O Shea is the new Society Secretary

Leading the troops for 2020 are Keith McMahon, Captain and Mike Buckley, President.

Captain Keith McMahon,

Keith takes on the role of Captain following on from his brother Karl who held the honour in 2019.

Keith’s history of playing with Crokes all came about by accident an accident that has happened to others on either side of the divide so to speak and the Incoming President had something to do with it. He played with Legion U8’s and when they stopped running the bus, Keith jumped on board Buckley’s bus with his other mates from Ardshanavooly and hence began a successful career with Crokes which saw him play underage and  12 years with the senior team mainly in the right corner back position. He achieved his pinnacle when playing in Croker with his beloved Crokes and did a great job marking Oisin McConville in that infamous day in Croke Park 2007 where Crokes were robbed of the ultimate All Ireland Club title. Retiring in 2012 from the seniors he continued playing with the juniors until 2015 and thereby ended a senior playing career that saw him amass an impressive array of titles with a historic team.

3 Munster Clubs

4 County Championships

2 Kerry Club

10 O Donoghue Cups

The 37 year old has also played soccer with Celtic, likes keeping fit and is an avid golfer making trips to the US in recent years with his buddies and names TPC Sawgrass as the best course he has played.

He runs a very successful construction company MC Construction.

He is married to Mary for 10 years and has a busy household with three kids Mia 8, Luke 6 and Chloe 2

We wish Keith a very enjoyable and successful 2020 leading the Crokes golfers.

President Mike Buckley

Mike was Captain of the society in 2008. The Bomber as he was known in his playing days (sported the beard) was an outstanding player spending most of his days at full forward but also played midfield underage. He was part of an underage team that won the first ever U12 Co. Championship in 1971 beating Laune Rangers and beat the same team again in 1977 at minor.  Along with his team mates of that era he was part of the young senior team (bar elder statesmen Niall Brosnan and Dee Coff RIP.) that won back to back  O Donoghue Cup in 1981 after a break of 13 years and a Co Intermediate in 1985 which ultimately saw a turnaround in the clubs fortunes, playing senior championship in 1986 and never looking back thereafter. With 8 O’ Donoghue Cups, 1 Co Championship, 2 Munster Club his ultimate prize was achieved in 1992 winning the All Ireland Club v Thomas Davis. He also has 3 County U21 and one senior Championship (1983) with Killarney. He served as administrator and coached with the club and his son Johnny has continued the Crokes connection playing a starring role for over 12 year at midfield and has represented Kerry at all grades winning All Ireland Senior in 2014 v Donegal. His daughter Laura also played with club and county before emigrating. A successful businessman he has built up one of the most successful transport coaching businesses in the country from the early days of Johnny and Mary B. Married to Eileen he is proud Dad to Laura, Johnny, Aine and Claire. He also became a grandad in 2019.  With his successful business well established, Mike is now beginning to enjoy his golf. A raconteur of renown we wish Mike a great golfing year.

  • Membership                                                             Membership of the society will again cost €40 if you have already paid your club membership. Club membership for 2020 is either €100 through the “Clear Air Boys” or €50 for standard membership. As can be seen by the fully equipped Gym, Storage Shed and new scoreboard this year. Funds generated by the Clear Air Boys” have been put to good use and I would encourage members of the Golf Society to support this initiative.  This year the closing date for club membership has been brought forward to March 1st.  Attached please find a link to the membership page on the club website which will allow you join the relevant category including the Clear Air Boys. The Committee having looked at current finances and also taking account of our Sponsors current situations, have decided to price the Society membership @ E20.00. This will help us in affording adequate prizes at each of the outings which I am sure you will appreciate.

You will all have seen recent correspondence from Chairman of the Dr Crokes club Patrick O’Sullivan asking us all to ensure we pay our 2020 membership. In that respect now is a good time to remind all Society members that it is a condition of membership of the golf society that we are current members of the Dr Crokes club. We would ask therefore that all members of the golf society, if you haven’t already done so,  to either pay membership on-line using the attached link https://member.clubforce.com/memberships_cart_m.asp?LL_ID=734&intMF_ID=5899#Anchoror drop the funds in to Vince Casey as soon as possible.

Thanks

Golf Committee
