Dr Crokes Golf Society 2017   26/03/2017

Happy 2017 to all members.

Leading the troops for 2017 are Brian Clarke, Captain and Paul Downey, President.

Brian Clarke needs no introduction to the Crokes supporters. A rare talent from a young age, His footballing skills and physical presence saw him dominate for Crokes at underage in a familiar role of full forward. He progressed through the ranks and represented Kerry at Minor, U21 and Senior winning an U21 All Ireland in 1996. He starred in the 1997 National Football League Final against Cork at a very wet Pairc Ui Caoimh where he scored 2 pts from play from centre forward and tormented the Cork defence all day. He went on the same year to win a senior All Ireland medal with the Kingdom beating Mayo in the final and while he was (unfairly) dropped for the Final he played a big part in Kerry’s successes in those seasons.

While major success eluded him at senior level with Dr Crokes he still collected two Club Championships and an O Donoghue Cup. His talents also were displayed on the soccer field where he represented Kerry in the Kennedy Cup (U-14) 1988 and 1989. His basketball skills were recognised by representing Ireland at U-17 and touring the USA. He played National League basketball with St Pauls from 1994 to 2005. His father Des (RIP) was a big supporter of Brian as he was of the talented Sean and Dessie (RIP) before him. His mother Marie and Caroline were very supportive of his sporting exploits.

An employee of an Post, he has a passionate interest in golf and is a regular on the fairways of Killarney Golf Club and a prominent member of the Crokes Golf Society, where he has often featured in the winners enclosure.

Our President for 2017 is Paul Downey, the current Club Secretary. A native of Waterford he is a renowned Sports and Landscape Artist and an avid sportsman. He came to Kerry and Killarney via Cork where he was stationed as a member of the Garda Siochana. He played Cork senior football championship with the Garda and later won a County Intermediate Championship with St Finbarrs, for whom he also lined out at fullback on the hurling team.

A retired Detective Sergeant he has regularly stated that one of the best decisions of his life was when he joined the Dr Crokes Club about 10 years ago and got involved with the senior hurling team, where his experience was invaluable to the team. It was only a natural progression when he took up the mantle of the busy role of Club Secretary.  He is a long serving member of Killarney Golf Club where he served as Chief Marshall for the 2010 and 2011 Irish Opens. He is also a regular participant with the Crokes Golf Society.

He has 12 solo exhibitions to his name and one famous painting of the Gooch scoring against Cork in the 2007 Final and aptly called ‘Opening the Floodgates’ is doing the rounds of the Kerry Libraries having been donated by purchaser, Killarney man Dr Jim O Sullivan. Last year’s Killarney Golf Club Captain commissioned from Paul an oil painting of Mahony’s Point 16th hole for his Captain’s prize.

He is the proud grandfather of four beautiful girls.

We wish both Brian and Paul and enjoyable and memorable year in 2017

Again like every other year we ask members to heed the membership section of this letter and make sure they are not disappointed by paying their membership fee to any member of the committee before or on our first outing

  • Membership                                                                                                                         Membership of the society will again cost €40 if you have already paid your club membership. Club membership has increased for 2017 is either €100 through the “Clear Air Boys” or €50 for standard membership. As can be seen by the fully equipped Gym & the Storage Shed, funds generated by the Clear Air Boys” have been put to good use and I would encourage members of the Golf Society to support this initiative.  Note, membership is to be paid before or at the first outing (if playing) or the 30th of March to any committee member. As the number of members is capped and there is a waitlist in operation, payment received after this date will not guarantee membership.
