Club Notes Week 34   27/08/2018

Weekly Notes 27th of August 2018

Senior County Championship - Round1

Dr Crokes 1-18 St Kierans 2-13

Played in Lewis Road on Saturday 25th of August

In a game in which we struggled for supremacy for forty-five minutes, we ran out winners in the end by two points. Credit also goes to St Kierans who had a defensive structure we found hard to break down and who also sent over some very good long distance points from play and from placed balls. They also breached our defence for two goals.

We won this game by having two great periods of play in the last fifteen minutes. We were four points down at the end of the third quarter but sent over four points without reply from the 47th to the 52nd minute to gain equality. Even though our opponents went a point in front again a minute later we took over again and had four unanswered points between the 56th and 64th minute to go three points clear going into the last minute of added time. St Kierans had a point on the stroke of full time to leave us winners by two points at the end of the play.

One would have to single out two of our leaders Colm Cooper and Johnny Buckley who stood up as leaders do in our last quarter of supremacy. Credit too to the rest of the team and the off the bench players who also upped their game during this revival. Our goalkeeper Shane Murphy was also very strong and decisive under the high ball as he needed to be as we had lost our full back Mike Moloney through injury before half time.

We had plenty of play in the first quarter and led six points to three after fifteen minutes. Our opponents had a point at the start of the second quarter and then went into the lead for the first time with a goal in the 19th minute. In the last ten minutes of this half they outscored us three points to two to go in at the interval leading by 1-7 to 0-8.

St Kierans had two points in the first few minutes of the second half and it was very much game on. A point by Colm Cooper and a good goal by David Shaw put the teams level after 37 minutes. A goal followed b a point put our opponents four points clear as we entered the last fifteen minutes, including injury time. We were now in a position we haven't been for a few years but we rose to the task in hand and outscored our opponents eight points to two in the remaining period of play.

There were positives and negatives in our display. We played on the back foot for a lot of the game and credit St Kierans for that. Our players deserve credit for their grandstand finish to achieve victory. We had nine scores on the day. All forwards scored and our bench accounted for 1-2. Our Management also deserves credit for freshening up the team when it was needed.

Team and scorers: Shane Murphy, John Payne (Capt), Mike Moloney, Fionn Fitzgerald, David O' Leary, Jason Lyne, David Naughton, Johnny Buckley 0-2, Alan O'Sullivan, Micheal Burns 0-3, Gavin O'Shea 0-1, Brian Looney 0-1, Colm Cooper 0-5 (0-3 frees), Daithi Casey 0-3 (0-1 free), Jordan Kiely 0-1.
