Weekly Notes 3rd of December

County League Division 1 Final

Played in Lewis Road

Dr Crokes 2-20 Kerins O' Rahilly's 3-12 AET (After extra time)

Our opponents got off to a great start and scored 1-3 without reply in the first ten minutes. We were also down to fourteen men at this stage and looked in dire straits. We quickly got back into the game and by the 20th minute had reduced the deficit to a point, 1-4 to 1-3. Our goal came from the penalty spot. Daithi Casey's effort was well saved by the goalie but Daithi knocked in the rebound. The Tralee boys had a point in the next few minutes. We hit another purple patch in the next seven minutes, sending over 1-4 without reply to go into injury time 2-6 to 1-5 in front. Just before the end Kerins O' Rahilly's struck for a Tommy Walsh goal to leave just one point between the teams at the end of the first half.

Even though we were against the elements in the second half we had the first two points to go three points in front. Our opponents had a point in the 37th minute to just leave them just two points behind. We got well on top in the next ten minutes and five points without reply put us seven points clear, 2-13 to 2-6 as we entered the last ten minutes plus three minutes of injury time. Kerins O' Rahilly's showed their team spirit in the remaining minutes and had the last five scores of the game, 1-4 without reply to equalise the game, 2-13 for the home team and 3-10 for the Visitors.

With the breeze at our back we were well on top in the first ten minutes of extra time and had the only scores of this period. This gave us a lead of 0-3 to nil as we faced the second half. The Tralee boys came very much into the game in the first five minutes of the period but we managed to equalise their two points in this five minutes. We however finished the better and outscored Kerins O'Rahilly's 0-4 to 0-2 in the second five minutes for a five point win, 2-20 to 3-12.

After seeing this game one wonders why we have to make so many rule changes. This was football of a high order, with no sweepers and a combined score of 5 goals and 32 points. We were glad that we were able to play a number of our fringe players and they certainly are now putting pressure on the first fifteen. We can also thank our goalie Shane Murphy for a great double save in the first few minutes of the second half.
