County League Round 7 Division 1

Spa 1-14 Dr Crokes 0-15

In a game in which both sides were understrength Spa ran out winners in the end by two points. Our opponents got over the line because they finished the game stronger and had the last three scores of the match, three points for a two point win. The defining moment however of the game happened in injury time in the first half. At this stage we led by 0-10 to 0-6 but Spa went through for a goal to go in at half time just a point behind.

We got off the better start in the second half and led 0-3 to 0-1 after ten minutes. By the 15th minute Spa had drawn level on a scoreline of four points each. In the next five minutes we had a productive period, scoring three points without reply. In the ten minutes before the interval we outscored the opposition three points to two for a lead of 0-10 to 0-6. Spa however struck for a goal in injury time. This left us just a point ahead at the interval 0-10 to 1-6.

In the first five minutes of the second half Spa levelled the game 0-11 to 1-8. There was never more than a point between the teams right through the rest of the half. We got our heads in front in the 55th minute when Mark O'Shea sent over a point. This gave us an 0-15 to 1-11 lead. This, however, was our last score of the game. In the last five minutes of normal time and the five minutes of injury time our opponents had three points without reply as they finished the stronger for a two point win.

Minor Match - Dr Crokes V Laune Rangers

On Tuesday last our minors recorded a win in the opening round of the County Championship. In very wet conditions both teams served up an exciting and entertaining game. Having shared 2 points a piece in the early stages, Crokes first goal came in the 11th minute. A great team move from our own half resulted in Jason Kerins finishing to the net. Our forwards were moving well, kicking some great scores from play in the damp conditions.Leading 1-06 to 0-04 @ HTJust 7 mins into the 2nd half we scored our second goal. An opportunistic goal superbly finished by Cian McMahon, after intercepting a kick out and lobbing the goalie. Laune Rangers fired into life after this and took control around the middle third. Their dominance allowed them to close the gap but our boys always seemed to have a bit extra to complete the job.Our defense was superb all through. Terry Sparling was rock solid at full back, Neil O' Shea did a superb job in man marking Laune Rangers danger man Gearoid Hassett and denied him any quality possession, Others to perform well were Evan Looney and Jason Kerins we never gave the opposition time on the ball. Both Michael Lenihan and Harry Potts gave everything around the middle of the park and our forward unit did very well in the conditions, but special mention to Padraic Looney, Cian McMahon and Sean McGann for their scores on a very wet night FT 2-09 to 0-10.

Hurling County League Div2 Rd 5 Vs Kilgarvan

Our final county league game took us to Kilgarvan on Thur 27th June to determine who finished top of the group and would be seeded for the semi-final draw.

The first 15 mins belonged to Kilgarvan, who were clearly up for the game as we struggled to gain a foothold. Kilgarvan had 1-3 on the board before we registered our first scores of the half with a brace of frees from Michael Lenihan and a point from Seanie Burchill. This seemed to give us the belief and we finished the half strongly to bring ourselves back into contention with some great scores from Rob Ryan, Kevin Landers, Mike Lenihan and Joe Enright. Half time score of 1-08 to 0-11.

The game was being played at Championship pace with no quarters given and two injuries late in the first half to Mike O’Keeffe and Seanie Burchill failed to kill our momentum. The half back line of Kevin Landers, Mike Milner and Shane Lyne were outstanding and with Jack Lenihan hoovering up the breaking ball around the centre this was our best performance of the year.

Nothing could separate the sides with the lead trading places several times in the second half. A goal from Kilgarvan on the 45 min mark looked like it would be the turning point for the home side, but the Crokes response of 1-3 unanswered was a testament to the character of the team. The goal from Mike Lenihan after a superb catch at the edge of the square and a great long range point from Mike McCarthy.

Kilgarvan rallied to reduce the deficit to one heading into injury time, before Jack Lenihan made sure we ended the campaign unbeaten; finishing a breaking ball to the net.

Final score 2-14 to 2-18.
