Club Notes Week 16 2019   23/04/2019

Weekly Notes 23rd of April

Club Championship - Round 3 - Group 2

Played in Kerins O'Rahillys Pitch on Saturday 20th of April

Dr Crokes 1-18 Kerins O'Rahillys 1-14

We came out on top in the end by four points in a game which both sides were anxious to win. Winning could give the victorious team place in the final of the competition while losing could mean being involved in a play off against the fourth placed team in Group 1. Our win qualified us for the final and other results steered O'Rahillys clear of the relegation play off.

Our opponents had the first two points of the game and led 0-3 to 0-1 after ten minutes. We came back with a point and just before the end of the first quarter Jordan Kiely struck for a goal which for our victory was a defining moment in the game. Both sides had several minutes of supremacy in the second quarter. From the 17th to the 23rd minute our opponents dominated and sent over five points without reply to go 0-8 to 1-2 ahead. The remaining minutes of this quarter belonged to us. We scored 7 unanswered point to go in at half time 1-9 to 0-8 in front.

Kerins O'Rahillys had two points at the start of second half to reduce our lead to two points. We had another period of supremacy in the next ten minutes and sent over 4 points in succession to give us a six point lead as we entered the last quarter. The teams exchanged points on two occasions in the next ten minutes. A Micheal Burns point in the 26th minute put us seven points clear. A goal by our opponents before we went into time added on left just 4 points between the teams. Kerins O'Rahillys outscroed us two points to one in the first few minutes of the five added on to leave just a goal between the teams. We were awarded a penalty in the last minute and Daithi Casey tapped it over the bar. The full time whistle sounded after the kick out.

Our opponents were short more influential players than we were and this helped us to get over the line. We won this game by virtue of our early goal, by our seven points without reply in as many minutes at the end of the second quarter and our 4 unanswered points before the the end of the 3rd quarter. A good display on the day but we will have to improve to beat the Group 1 winners next weekend.

We wish Gavin White who had an outstanding game a speedy recovery from his injury. Our hope and prayers that the injury will not interfere too much with his University studies and that he will during the year lead his Club and his County to major success.

Dr Crokes Hurlers

Dr Crokes Senior Hurlers played Millstreet in Millstreet on Sunday morning 21-Apr in Rd 3 of the Duhallow JAHL.

We travelled minus some key players, however with a strong squad this year we hoped to get our first win of the league and build on the strong performances in the previous fixtures. Michael Lenihan opened the scoring in the first minute from a placed ball before a long ball into the square found its way into the Crokes net. Our discipline let us down in the first half as we gave away 1-4 from needless frees and with the Millstreet free taker; Cork inter county player Mark Ellis rarely missing we found ourselves 1-7 to 3 pts adrift approaching the twenty minute mark. We added 4 points before the break with Michael Lenihan and Rob Ryan contributing, leaving the half time score at 2-9 to 0-7.

The second half was evenly balanced with Millstreet starting the stronger and Crokes finishing strong. Again easy frees proving costly. We had a chance to reduce the deficit to 4 points in the closing stages when we were awarded a penalty, however a good save from the Millstreet keeper left the second half tied at 7 points each. Scores from Michaels Lenihan, Anthony Keogh and Rob Ryan. Final score 2-16 to 0-14.

Now confident that we are competitive at this level we need to up the ambition and target a win in the remaining fixtures. Eliminating the simple errors will go a long way to achieving that.
