Weekly Notes 23rd of July

County League Round 9

Played in Kilcummin

Kilcummin 1-9 Dr Crokes 1-16

Aided by the strong breeze we got off to a great start and sent over six unanswered points in the first quarter. We then had the first score of the second quarter, a point but the hosts came well into the game in the second quarter and had two points. We finished the first thirty minutes the better and two points without reply gave us an interval lead of 0-9 to 0-2.

A goal by us at the start of the second half threatened to end the game as a contest but it seemed to ignite Kilcummin who had three points without reply to leave just seven points between the sides and twenty five minutes to go. We went on the offensive straight away and kicked three points without reply before the end of the third quarter. The teams had two points each before we entered the last ten minutes. This left us in front by 1-14 to 0-8. In this last ten minutes Kilcummin outscored us 1-2 to 0-2 leaving us winners at the final whistle on a score of 1-16 to 1-9.

Both teams were very much understrength but our replacements were probably more experienced than our opponents.

Team and scorers: Johnny O'Leary, David Naughton 0-1, Lorcan Mc Monagle, John Payne, Brian Looney 0-3, David O'Leary, Jack Griffin, Alan O'Sullivan 0-2, Mark O'Shea 0-1, Mike Milner, Johnny Buckley 0-1, Gavin O'Shea, Paul Clarke, David Shaw 1-2, Jordan Kiely 0-6 (0-2 frees, 0-1 Penalty)

Under 13 Girls

The club's U 13 girls competed in the annual Sandra Keane Invitation tournament, which was held in the John Mitchels GAA Complex. Their opening group game was against a very strong Abbeydourney team, who in normal circumstances would be competing two divisions above them, but to their credit, the girls demonstrated the huge character of heart to the end even though they were overrun by their opponents. But, the club has a resilient bunch at this age group and they dusted themselves off and were eager for their next game. Little did they know at the time but their remaining 4 games were to be highly entertaining and close.Second group game was against Castleisland Desmonds and even though the came up short by 3 points, the girls were upbeat. Final game of the group was v Castlegregory and their victory here qualified them for the plate competition. The semi-final v Kerins O'Rahillys was a cracking game, both teams demonstrated great skill throughout and at the final whistle the girls were a score to the good. Na Gael were their opponents in the final, were again the action went from one goal to the other and weary legs were to be the biggest obstacle for both teams. With the girls holding a slim lead through the second half, you can imagine there were great scenes of delight when the final whistle eventually sounded, and the team capturing the plate. Megan,Alan and Pádraig, the mentors for this age group were so delighted for the girls and their efforts and were most appreciative for the support of the parents who were in a position to support the girls on the day, but the stars of the show who were captained by Gráinne Byrne were Natalia Maj,Ellie Galvin, Jocelyn Hickey, Sinead Byrne,Saoirse O'Sullivan ,Ella Bartlett, Ali O'Donoghue and player of the final Leah McMahon,Keira Geaney,Clodagh McGorrigan,Sadhbh Stack,Ella Barrett , Sabra Hickey , Natalia Igielsk,Norah McGlynn,Aoileann Ní Dhúibhain, Sarah Cooper.
