Club Notes Week 26 2022   05/07/2022

County SHC Dr.Crokes 4-09 Abbeydorney 4-14. On Saturday last our senior hurlers got our County Championship campaign underway in windy but dry conditions against Abbeydorney in Austin Stack Park. We went into a 2 point to 1 lead in the opening minutes with points from Mark Heffernan and Declan Hickey. 4 unanswered scores by Abbeydorney before a Mark Heffernan free meant we trailed 5 points to 3 at the end of the first quarter. 2 more points from our opponents before their first goal of the evening as the half time whistle approached. We trailed 1-09 to 0-04 at the break. 3 minutes in to the second half Tom Doyle buried a low shot passed the Abbeydorney goal before a Heffernan free cut the gap to 5 points. Abbeydorney’s second goal came just 3 minutes later, but we responded well keeping the scoreboard ticking over. The second half was a goal fest, 7 goals in 30 minutes. Conor Bohan made some top class saves from close range. 2 Mark Heffernan goals cut a 12 point deficit to 6 in a matter of minutes. Both goals were top quality, with our intercounty man able to pick his spot past a packed goalmouth. Abbeydorney’s final goal came a couple of minutes from time. 2 Heffernan frees and a well taken goal from Tom Doyle ensured we didn’t go down without a fight.

County League Div.6 Dr.Crokes 2:07 Miltown/Castlemaine 4:12. Our third team were defeated by a stronger Miltown/Castlemaine team away from home on Thursday last. We now sit in the middle of the table.

U15 East Kerry League Div.1 Dr.Crokes 5-06 to Kenmare Shamrocks 6-07. Our U15 boys were part of a cracking game on Wednesday last in Lewis Road where supporters were treated to an 11 goal fest. Missing a few regulars, the boys put in a great performance and beaten by 4 points in the end against a very well drilled Kenmare team in a sporting contest.

U14 Girls Our U14 girls had a great win in very difficult conditions against a very good Inbhear Scéine Gaels team down in Kemare on Monday last. Despite torrential rain the girls gritted out a tough 5-03 to 2-07 win. Saoirse O’Donoghue was outstanding at the heart of the defense with Elizabeth Brosnan, Ali Lyne and Aoife O’Donoghue also impressing. Siofra Randles got some crucial scores from midfield, with Keva McCarthy and Annie Brosnan also contributing to keep the scoreboard going in our favour. We maintained out 100% record in the division. Well done to all the girls.

U12 Girls Our 12 girls hosted Beaufort in the U12 Division 3 Final. It was a ding dong battle but two first half goals gave us the half time lead that we needed. Beaufort, aided by the wind, came more into it in the second half. They scored a succession of unanswered points that left the game in the melting pot. The girls never gave up and with some solid defending and some great scores from play we ended with a 2-04 to 0-07 win. A big well done to all the girls who put in a great effort throughout the year.

Academy A fantastic day was had at the Donie Sheahan Memorial Blitz on Saturday morning. Everyone had a terrific time, with plenty of games, fun, food and medals. It was a great event and a most appropriate way to honour club stalwart and former Club Patron, the late Donie Sheahan. The cake sale and raffle were also a great success, providing much needed funds for our young players. A massive thanks to our academy coaches, event organisers, parents and all who helped out in any way. Of course we also thank the Sheahan family for sponsoring the blitz.
